Phase one at Chalmers University of Technology

First part of the project in the Chalmers area, consisted of a total on 1.500 shuttle departures in mixed traffic from the beginning of May until the end of December 2018. The service was primarily used by students and visitors of the campus, and most people found it to be a safe and comfortable journey.

In a survey conducted during the project, 69% of the participants said that they found the shuttles both useful and effective and a question concerning user acceptance and perception showed that 9 out of 10 passengers were satisfied with the self-driving shuttle service.

Birger Löfgren, project manager at RISE Viktoria said that, “despite the obvious and deliberate constraints of this bus’ technology - i.e. how fast and how complicated routes it can drive - the results show that people think it meets the real needs”.

The Holo team has also enjoyed testing the bus in a challenging environment with road work, house construction work, cars, bikes and pedestrians, and we conclude that the bus has been able to handle many of these situations so far.

Phase two at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg

The second phase of the pilot project in Gothenburg launched in Lindholmen Science Park on April 24th 2019, and ran until November 22nd 2019.

Around 25,000 people travel through Lindholmen Science Park every day: employees at international companies and national authorities, students, scientists and residents. The area is expanding a lot and this means even more people will be coming in and out of this part of the city. Urban development is taking up more and more space and parking areas are disappearing - which is where this project plays in.

The project had two self-driving buses, running a free shuttle service from Polstjärnegatan, down Stenbocksgatan, Gamla Ceresgatan, Plejadgatan, Lärdomsgatan, Diagonalen and back again.

At one end of the route is a parking area where the monthly parking permit fee was been halved during the course pilot project in order to encourage motorists to park there and take the shuttle for the last part of their journey. This could hopefully have reduce the amount of cars that travelled into the city centre, leaving the urban space more open and less congested.

After the launch on April 24th, we began daily operations at Lindholmen, where we got to know the area and the people who travel through it. Our operators sent lots of feedback to us every day, and our overall feeling is that the bus was well received in the area, even though the number of daily passengers was not impressive.
