Freight robots in Oslo

The Norwegian Postal service (Posten Norge) had a strategic goal of investigating the possibilities of autonomous vehicles. Posten wanted to test the potential of using autonomous freight robots to complete some of their first/last-mile deliveries in central Oslo. Holo helped Posten define a project with 6 different stages - from introduction and requirement specification to operations and final analysis of results.

Together with Posten Norge and AMOI, Holo implemented and deployed the Ottonomy-powered freight robot called the Ottobot to deliver goods from restaurants at Aker Brygge in central Oslo to a Posten delivery hub, making an autonomous first-mile solution. The robot operated for four weeks in an initial test phase. Posten is now considering how they want to proceed.

The Ottobot is built to operate autonomously in urban areas like Aker Brygge. The solution was integrated with the Amoi ordering system. The Amoi system is daily by customers to order food from restaurants in the Oslo area, by integrating the Ottobots in the system we were able to make it part of the existing delivery system.

The project was successful in that 109 out of 110 packages were delivered and 94,1 kilometres autonomously driven. In addition, the robots were able to operate in harsh Nordic weather conditions with temperatures below 0 degrees and snow on the streets. At the same time, all deliveries were conducted in a safe and secure reliable autonomous operation.

Holo has been involved in all stages of the project - from vendor selection to getting approvals and daily operations.
